Bagels & Plus Now The Vegetable Garden

On 3/4/08, Kosher-NY reported that The Vegetable Garden had not closed, but in fact merged with Bagels and Plus.

Kosher-NY recently received the following from the owner of The Vegetable Garden:

"I am pleased to report that the restaurant located at 243 West 38th Street (between 7th & 8th Avenues) in midtown Manhattan, formerly known as Bagels and Plus, is now The Vegetable Garden. We continue to operate and have already made substantial improvements. We will be unveiling a new sign on the restaurant in the upcoming weeks, IY"H, (the sign outside still reads Bagels and Plus), but we are operating as The Vegetable Garden. Our complete menu can be viewed at our web site www.veggarden.com. We continue to be under the strict supervision of the Star-K, and are cholov Yisrael, pas Yisrael, and Shomer Shabbat. We can be reached on both the phone numbers of the former Bagels and Plus as well as The Vegetable Garden, which was previously located at 48 E 41st Street. Those numbers are (212) 997-7558 and (212) 883-7668."

When The Vegetable Garden took over Bagels and Plus, there were only 28 seats in the restaurant. By mid-July, there should be seating for approximately 80 people.

Kosher-NY has now updated the database. Please search for The Vegetable Garden from this point forward.

Kosher Village No More

Kosher Village, located at 23 Third Avenue (at Astor Place and 8th Street), is no longer under Kosher supervision. Some might say that is 3,000 USD down-the-drain, as many of you will remember the "Name Our Glatt Kosher Restaurant Contest" from a short while ago. Well, not only is the restaurant discontinuing its (very short) supervision, but it is also changing its name too. Go figure.

Friedman's Delicatessen to Open in January

There is a new kosher delicatessen opening in the Chelsea market: Friedman's Delicatessen (as in Henry Kalifowitz and Barry Friedman).

Scheduled to open the first week of 2008, Friedman's will be a traditional delicatessen serving "all the traditional foods that were once a standard in New York neighborhoods and have regretfully been lost." The owners told us about their offerings: "The sandwiches will be huge. Fresh Brisket with natural gravy. Corn beef and our Famous Pastrami. The special bowl of soup and a 1/2 sandwich will be .95. The Rotisserie Roasted chicken with a choice of two sides and soup will be our to-go special. A great meal when you yearn for Real Home Cooking."

We've also learned that catering will be handled by Henry Kalifowitz, a veteran of Kosher delicatessen for over 40 years.

Kosher-NY has also been advised that the restaurant will be under Rabbinical Supervision, but we do not yet know the specific hashgachah.

Sacred Chow to offer Special Chanukah Menu

Everyday, Sacred Chow provides a wide variety of daily specials.

According to Owner Cliff Preefer: "For Chanukah, we have decided to create fun vegan alternatives to our most-loved, traditional Jewish foods. Of course everything is kosher certified, heart-healthy, safe, sustainable and perfect for a low-carbon diet, which is good for our planet and Israel."

Sacred Chow's Chanukah Menu is as follows:

Hummus of the Day - Israeli Hummus, herbed with Parsley. Creamy, delicious hummus, rich in tahini, lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil. Tastes like a night at the Kotel.

Protein of the Day - Slow-Roasted Seitan Brisket. Sweet, soft, delicate with prunes and carrots, and a touch of kosher certified red burgundy. Aunt Hannale would be proud!

Soup Of the Day - Grandma's Soy Curd-Gefilte Soup. Not exactly like grandma's, but then again we don't remember grandma making Gelfite soup. More like a downtown, hip New York grandma's soup who lives around the corner from Chinatown, made with sweet white miso, nori sea vegetable, lots of carrots, parsley, celery, dill and onions. Very tasty!

Grain of the Day - Tofu Challah Bread. Whatta Challah! Now this is the heart-healthy challah of all challot. A bissele tofu, a bissele of this and a bissele of that, and "whallah" it's challah!

Vegetable of the Day - Potato Latkes w/ coconut cream sour cream. Just perfect! Really, and vhat a latke! And OY, not fried! It's baked with luscious coconut cream sour cream. It does your heart and your Bubbe good.

Dessert of the Day - Apple Streudel & Chanukah Jelly Roll. Need we say more!? Heat it up, with a little soy ice cream on the side, and enjoy the Festival of Lights with sweetness, blessings and the light of the holiday season.

Kosher Subway on the Upper West Side?!

Although we are still waiting confirmation from Subway®'s corporate offices, it seems as though Subway is planning its Kosher expansion to Manhattan's Upper West Side. No longer is there just chatter on the streets.

Recently, a MySpace page surfaced under the username "Manhattan's 1st Glatt Kosher Subway Restaurant." The user profile claims that a supporting website, GlattKosherSubwayNYC.com will be coming soon -- and more importantly, their details:

"Coming soon to NYC Manhattan's Upper West Side. In keeping up with kosher dietary laws, the menu at the Glatt Kosher Subway restaurant will feature meat and parve; no dairy items will be served...the menu is virtually identical to that of any other SUBWAY® restaurant...The restaurant will be open six days each week for breakfast, lunch and dinner and will be available for dining, take-out and catering services. The availability of kosher, healthy, quickly-prepared food is a great amenity for the general public. We invite everyone to stop by and try our world-famous Glatt Kosher submarine sandwiches."

You heard it here first! Stay tuned to Kosher-NY for more updates!

New Second Avenue Deli Buys New Building

According to a 10/30/07 Real Deal report, the return of the Second Avenue Deli will be a permanent return:

"The Lebewohl family has closed on its purchase of the new site of the famed Second Avenue Deli. In an all-cash deal, 162 East 33rd Street sold for .21 million, or 7 per square foot. The building, between Park and Lexington Avenues, also houses seven one-bedroom apartments. The new deli, which opens next week, will seat at least 75 people in a renovated space that was the site of a tapas restaurant. The buyer's name was not disclosed, but the Lebewohl family's purchase of the building has already been reported. The old deli, which closed on Jan. 1, 2006, had 128 seats. Massey Knakal Realty Services represented the seller, while Stuart Rubinfeld, Matel Realty's president, procured the buyer."

In other news, Eater.com tells us that the Deli will be feature a full bar and be open 24/7, so stay tuned to Kosher-NY for Second Avenue Deli's Kosher St
